Having taken the world by storm with her concise and colourful looks, this month's influencer is not only showing up all over your feed, but on your TV screens too! With campaign after campaign landing in her lap and charisma by the bucket load, Chhimmi Gurung is a superstar on the rise and we got the opportunity to sit down and find out more about how this Nepalese born beauty became the makeup mogul we adore and look up to so much.
E: Chim! What do you want the world to know about you?
C: That I’m more than just my weight *insert eyeroll*. My weight doesn’t bother me but unfortunately, I grew up in a society that has normalised fat shaming so when I’d meet a relative- that’s the first and only thing they wanted to talk about! For this reason, I’ve had to avoid talking about my weight online and I want the focus to be on the art I create- but it seems impossible. People are obsessed with criticising others and their bodies and I absolutely hate it.
... and your star sign?
I’m a virgo but the older I get, the more I can see the Rising and Moon signs in me.
We've seen you have some amazing success with the likes of Superdrug and Garnier, do you have any future dream collabs?
Yeah, It’s been wild- seeing myself in Superdrug stores and my face pop up on Garnier ads! I’ve had the opportunity to work with some unbelievable brands but of course- goes without saying.. I would LOVE to collab with Glisten Cosmetics one day!! I already have someone on standby to design a logo for me (to go on the packaging) so I’m ready when you are.
Your looks are always flawless, when and how did you get into makeup?
That's very kind of you Erin- thank you! I was quiet and timid growing up so I struggled making friends. I’d stay in a lot, read beauty magazines and as a teen, I really got into makeup. My mum- who has always been into fashion and beauty- would buy me makeup/ hair tools so I would experiment with different looks and then at school, I slowly started making friends as they’d be interested in how I do my hair. I’d do theirs before lessons and sometimes they would trust me to cut their hair! Then as I grew older, I found more people with the same interests as me- especially in uni where I studied fashion. Instagram and blogging was just starting back then so I’d share my looks online and the photographers, stylists, designers I’d met at uni would ask me to do the makeup on shoots. I was working for free but I loved it and I didn’t mind. Then, it just snowballed from there!
Can you please give us some tips on how to get those clean, detailed lines?
First of all, don’t be scared to make mistakes. Clean lines are achievable but no one’s perfect so try your best to draw a clean line and if it’s a little wonky.. just wipe the edges using a clean wet brush! The flat brush F1 is the best one to use. And my other tips are to have your mirror close, arms rested on the table and to use the thinner brushes- liner brush 1, 4 and 8 are my favs.
What inspires you as a Beauty Content Creator?
I’m currently going through a phase where I‘m finding joy in creating looks inspired by the 60’s- my favourite era! I’ve always loved the fashion from that decade and the music makes me so happy. Especially ‘Baby Love’ by The Supremes! But, I mainly take inspiration from the art, design and illustrations from then.
Any tips for anyone looking to get into the industry?
Be yourself, always push your creative boundaries and be honest with your reviews and recommendations!
Do you have an OG Glisten Product that you just can't live without?
Yes! ‘Strawberry’ because I love pink, ‘Cola’ and ‘Milk’ because I use black and white to do nearly all my graphic liner looks!
A non-Glisten product?
It’s got to be The Beauty Crop BFF brow wax and the Hourglass face palettes.
And the most important question of all , what is your go-to pizza topping?
I always order a BBQ meat feast!
